SPECIAL EVENT "MAIWENN, AGAINST ALL ODDS"  November 3rd -5th,  Imperial Cinema

 

POLISS, winner of the Grand Prix du Jury Cannes 2011, will open CINEMANIA  on November 3rd at 7:30PM at the Imperial Cinema in its North American premiere screening. Director/actress/screenwriter Maiwenn will be present at the opening to introduce her film, and will be available to dialogue with CINEMANIA audiences following the 2:00PM screening of POLISS on Friday, November 4th.

With the creation of POLISS, Maiwenn's star has risen dramatically in Europe. The fearless independence and astonishing talent of the sensitive director/actress is immediately evident in her latest film. Maiwenn's newest work has gained in maturity and authority, garnering great recognition with critics and public alike. Her first feature as a director, FORGIVE ME, was presented at CINEMANIA 2007.
 
POLISS brings us inside the traumatic daily activities of a team of male and female officers of the Brigade of Protection of Minors attached to the Paris police force. It's a stunning film that will galvanize Montreal audiences to engage in discussions with the director in "An Encounter With Maiwenn" to be held at 3:15PM on Saturday, Nov. 5th at the Imperial Cinema, moderated by Dennis Trudeau, acclaimed television journalist and long-time friend of CINEMANIA. Maiwenn will recount what inspired her to make a film of such originality, the influence of such artists as Maurice Pialat, Bob Marley and Joey Starr, as well as her directorial methodologies and her ability to finally confront her own personal demons.

 

SPECIAL EVENT "MASTERCLASS WITH KLAPISCH" November 6th, Imperial cinema

 

Cédric Klapisch, co-guest-star of CINEMANIA's opening weekend, will be at the Imperial Cinema to present the Quebec premiere of his latest film, MY PIECE OF THE PIE, box office of over 1 million entries in France!  Klapisch characterizes his new romantic comedy as a small independent production despite starring the high-profile team of Karine Viard and Gilles Lellouche. Screenings are on Saturday, November 5th, at 7:15PM, and, Monday, November 7th, at 9:30AM. Klapisch will also be holding a master class, "Conversations with Cedric Klapisch", at the Imperial Cinema, Sunday, November 6th at 3:30PM, moderated by Diane Poitras, program director at the Cinematheque Quebecoise.

 

ROUND TABLE : “ POLITICAL PERSUASION and CONTEMPORARY FRENCH FILMMAKING “ November 12th, 3 PM, Imperial Cinema

 

At 3:30PM on Saturday, November 12th, following the screening of THE MINISTER, CINEMANIA has organized a POLITICAL ROUND TABLE discussion with director PIERRE SCHOELLER (Winner of the CINEMANIA Prix du Public for VERSAILLES, 2008). The discussion will be led by television personality DENNIS TRUDEAU. The journalist and film critic, HELEN FARADJI (24 Images), will join the Round Table.

 

SPECIAL EVENT "RETROSPECTIVE KLAPISCH : KLAPISCH UNDER THE KLIEG LIGHTS" November 4th-6th, Cinematheque quebecoise

 

CINEMANIA will be collaborating for the first time with the Cinematheque Quebecoise in a Klapisch retrospective – LE PÉRIL JEUNE, UN AIR DE FAMILLE, and NI POUR NI CONTRE (BIEN AU CONTRAIRE), will be personally introduced by the director in a series of special screenings at the Cinematheque.
